The Garthmyl South Suffolk stud was established by J.S. Elliot in 1948. When his son, J.K.S. Elliot (Ken) took over Garthmyl in 1963, stud ewe numbers were built up. There are at present 120 registered South Suffolk ewes from which 60 prime lamb sires are sold per annum. In 1994, Garthmyl used a Texel ram over some of Garthmyl's South Suffolk ewes to produce SouthTex prime lamb sires. These rams have met an enthusiastic market because they have the faster growing attributes of the South suffolk and the fleshing of the Texel. In 1998 a Finnish Landrace ram was used over some of Garthmyl's Texel ewes. This was to produce FinnTex rams for maternal use. These sires produce smaller lambs at birth, which is ideal for ewe hogget lambing. Although the lambs are originally smaller than their peers, they have the ability to catch up. They also have the added advantage of high fecundity, mothering and milking ability from the Finnish Landrace and the muscling and hardiness of the Texel. Rams are now available for sale. In January before rams are offered for sale, an ultra sonic sound measurement for ribeye muscle area and fat depth is conducted. This has been done since 1996. The measurements give Liveweight, EMA (eye muscle area in square centimeters) and sub-cutaneous fat depth over the last rib readings. The readings for this years two tooth rams are listed below. |
